Class AAA Girls

Morgantown's Monica Chase scored a 2:19 anchor leg to lead Morgantown to a surprisingly close victory. Their time of 9:38.15 ranks as the 3rd Best All-Time State Meet Performance. Cabell Midland was exceptional in 2nd with a 9:40.17, setting the tone for a big-time weekend for them, and also giving them the 4th Best All-Time State Meet Performance. Elkins got a 2:17 anchor leg from Heather Saffel to close to a close 3rd, and give them the 6th Best All-State State Meet Performance. What a year for the 4x800!! Preston was a solid 4th. University used a 2:17 anchor leg from Amber Riley to claim 5th. Parkersburg also came in at under 10:00 to take 6th. Jefferson was very strong in 7th with a 10:02. Pole Vault
Hurricane's Kristen Loughry soared over 10' and was the only competitor in the field able to do so, tying her for the 9th Best All-Time Class AAA State Meet Performance. Four competitors were able to clear 9'6, with George Washington's Brittany Pratt and Parkersburg's Miranda Richards and Jessica Boggs vaulting into a tie for 2nd. RunWV's Current Score: 11 of 12.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
Parkersburg took a surprisingly easy win with their 1:06.12 clocking. Martinsburg took a surprise 2nd from the 2nd of four heats. John Marshall overcame a fall to still take 3rd. Musselman edged out Brooke for 4th. Hurricane took the final spot by only 0.07. I wish I could remember this race better because I only had Martinsburg 6th on my watch. I don't know if I clicked their finish really late (the other times I had for that heat were pretty much within the expected 0.24 to 0.30) or if someone else goofed.
RunWV's Current Score: 16 of 18.

Shot Put
Cabell Midland took a step forward with a 1-2 finish in the Shot Put. Ashley Morrow took the title for the Midland ladies and teammate Megan Scites was less than a foot behind in 2nd. Capital's Fawn Washington scored a 7" edge over Parkersburg's Megan Pratt for 3rd. Brooke's Terina Miller was the only competitor in the 34' category in her 5th place showing. Lewis' Lisa Shamblin took the final spot by just 3".
RunWV's Current Score: 21 of 24.

3200 Meter Run
The opening of the race saw a huge pack of at least 9 girls run together for the first two laps. On the third lap, Preston's Kaylyn Christopher took off and opened a nine second lead that would eventually grow as large as 48 seconds. The only excitement was if she would break the State Record or not. She cruised to what appeared to be an easy 10:55.52, giving her the Best All-Time State Meet Performance. The real excitement in this race was the battle for 2nd place. After Christopher departed from the pack, lap 3 saw at least 8 girls within 1 second of each other. At the mile mark, there were still 8 within 2 seconds of each other, all crossing between 5:47 and 5:49. After five laps, the same 8 were still in close contention. Lap 6 saw six of the ladies open a small gap on the other two. On lap seven, those two dropped from contention, as the other six pulled to 7-9 seconds ahead. The six still in contention all crossed between 10:22 and 10:24. A furious finish saw places 2 through 6 finish less than two seconds apart, with Cabell Midland's Rachel Riley sprinting to the front of the pack in the last 40 meters. Morgantown's Allison Pettit was just 0.44 seconds back in 3rd. Cabell Midland's Alicia Thomas also used a big finish to move from 6th to 4th in the final meters, just 0.32 seconds behind Pettit. University's Jennifer Van der Sloot was a mere 0.20 seconds behind Thomas. Jefferson's Brooke Boening was less than a second behind in taking the final place. The 2nd place time was 11:37.36. The 6th place time was 11:39.23. Preston's Ashley Teets couldn't quite match the kick of the others, but ran a strong 11:45.65. Hampshire's Rana Conneway also held on to come in under 12:00 with her 11:55.88 clocking. Cabell Midland closed the evening strong, just as they had started the day.
RunWV's Current Score: 26 of 30.

Morgantown's Cari Shaffer was the 3rd Freshman placer in the event with her 5th place finish. Jefferson's Laura Lovett just nipped North Marion's Keri Bland at the line. Bland pulled a muscle in the event and was unfortunately done for the day.
RunWV's Current Score: 35 of 42.

1600 Meter Run
Just like last year, Preston's Kaylyn Christopher took control on the 3rd lap. Christopher narrowly missed going under 5:00 with her 5:00.18, but it was easily the Best All-Time State Meet Performance. University's Amber Riley clocked a 5:04.55, an outstanding time that gave her the 3rd Best All-Time State Meet Performance. Preston's Jordan Hamric broke away from the pack in the middle of lap 3 to take firm control of 3rd. Cabell Midland's Alicia Thomas again stormed from behind down the stretch to pull out a fourth. Morgantown's Ahna Lewis scored a 5th in a close battle with Parkersburg's Ellen Kist, who finished 6th and Jefferson's Tara Franklin The first seven all clocked in at under 5:30.
RunWV's Current Score: 40 of 48.

300 Meter Low Hurdles
One of the highlights of the day saw Buckhannon-Upshur's Chelsea Carrier just get by Hurricane's Kristen Loughry. Carrier's time of 44.57 ranked as the Best All-Time State Meet Performance and even gave her the Best All-Time Performance at Any Meet despite stumbling badly early in the race. Loughry's time of 44.73 ended the day as the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance. Hedgesville's Miranda Reed was very strong in 3rd, crossing the line in less than 46 seconds. High Jump
Bridgeport's Kendall McCaugherty and Hedgesville's Natasha Redman both soared over 5'8, with McCaugherty taking the title on tie-breakers. McCaugherty took the title on tie-breakers, but our All-Time Best Tie-Breakers show Redman with the 2nd Best All-Time State Meet Performance(s) and McCaugherty with the 3rd Best All-Time State Meet Performance(s). The tie-breaker is the 2nd best State Meet jump, and Redman has a 5'4 State Meet jump to go along with her 5'8, while McCaugherty only has a 5'0 State Meet jump to accompany her 5'8. North Marion's Danielle Perkins and Parkersburg's Erin Dansey each cleared 5'2 in taking 3rd and 4th, respectively. RunWV's Current Score: 62 of 78.

4x200 Meter Relay
Talk about completely tanking a set of picks. Only two of the predicted teams placed in the event. Jefferson scored the victory in a very close race that saw the top five teams separated by 0.7 seconds. Wheeling Park finished only 0.39 back. Cabell Midland and South Charleston were separated by less than 0.01 with Cabell Midland with Midland's run occurring in the 1st heat. Martinsburg was just 0.05 back, also running from the 1st heat. Hampshire took the final spot by just 0.03 seconds.
RunWV's Current Score: 64 of 84.

Morgantown's Lindsay Gutta scored a narrow 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 78 of 102.

4x400 Meter Relay
With the team title already well in hand, Cabell Midland decided to close out the meet the same way they ran the rest of it...with a standout performance. Their 4:03.18, including a 58 second anchor leg from Danielle Winningham ranks as the 4th Best All-Time State Meet Performance and 3rd in Class AAA. Morgantown put up quite a fight, and their 4:04.21 ranks as the 5th Best All-Time State Meet Performance and 4th in Class AAA. Preston ran a very strong 4:10 to take a solid 3rd. Parkersburg edged Elkins by just 0.05 for 4th. Martinsburg scored a 6th out of the 1st heat.

Martinsburg +11
Fairmont Senior + 9

Class AAA Boys

4x800 Meter Relay
Cabell Midland took the lead on the first leg and never relinquished it. A pair of 2:01's from their first two legs put them well out in front, and they easily held on for the win by over 3 seconds. George Washington was really the only team that was even close at the end. Only those two teams, with an 8:13.47 and an 8:16.69 went under 8:20. Preston closed in 2:02 (Josh Feather) to take 3rd. Parkersburg South held 4th. East Fairmont got a 2:00 anchor leg from Travis Hamrick to move into 5th. John Marshall edged North Marion for 6th.
RunWV's Current Score: 5 of 6.

As he had all season long, Robert C. Byrd's Travis Coleman dominated the competition winning by over 4' with his toss of 54'9.25. Buckhannon-Upshur's Keith Branch was the only other competitor to top 50'. South Charleston's Brandon Reinhart was less than a foot back in 3rd. Parkersburg's Justin Adkins was the only other thrower to top 140'. Buckhannon-Upshur took a second medal in the event with Ryan Godwin's 4th place finish. Hampshire Sophomore Matt Davis scored a 5th, and Martinsburg's Mathew Porter landed a 6th.
RunWv's Current Score: 18 of 24.

3200 Meter Run
A large pack stayed together for most of 5 laps before Preston's Josh Feather finally started to pull away. He held up for the 2+ second win over George Washington's Nick Walsh. Cabell Midland's Cass Meadows held off Wheeling Park's Ryan Beabout as the front four went under 10:00. Preston's Travis Mersing just missed joining that group in 5th. Elkins' Alex Zurbuch ran a season best by 18 seconds to land the final point in the event.
RunWV's Current Score: 23 of 30.

Long Jump
Martinsburg's Jordan Jackson backed up his regional performance with another 21+ foot jump to take the title by just over 5". Morgantown's Quinn Law also jumped over 21' to take 2nd. Buckhannon-Upshur Sophomore Cody Servetas nipped Nicholas' Matt Lucas by 1/4" for 3rd. Cabell Midland Sophomore Ryan Ramsby was less than 2" back in 5th. Musselman's Matt Rouzer passed Hedgesville's Michael Bowers in the last 20 meters to take 2nd. Jefferson's Neil Whitesell showed what a State Meet is all about by knocking 12 seconds off his time to take a very surprising 4th. My hat's off to you Neil. I picked you to finish dead last. That's why we run the race. Preston's Kenny Johnston spent most of the first two laps getting cut off and regaining his stride and getting cut off and regaining his stride. At least three times he had to nearly stop and start again and still managed to pull into 5th place down the stretch to take 5th. George Washington's Nick Walsh grabbed the final place by less than 0.01 over Cabell Midland's David Bias.
RunWV's Current Score: 37 of 48.

High Jump As with the Class AAA Girls, the AAA Boys were soaring. Martinsburg's Jordan Jackson, still riding high from his long jump win, leaped a season's best by 6" clearing 6'8. Bridgeport's Matt Wilson also cleared 6'8 in taking 2nd. Both jumps equal performances on the All-Time Best List, but the tie-breaker system leaves them off the list as neither has at least a 6'4 State Meet jump to go along with this year's 6'8. Four jumpers cleared 6'2 to take the other four places with John Marshall's Matt Deel and Martinsburg's Kevin Wesley tying for 3rd, South Charleston's Xaeryus Verdell taking 5th, and Robert C. Byrd's Dwight Holden pulled past Cabell Midland's Wade Midkiff over the last two hurdles to take the win by just 0.06 in 14.63. Bridgeport's Matt Wilson edged Wheeling Park's Andy Goldbaugh by 0.03 for 3rd. Buckhannon-Upshur's Michael Ware ran a 15.00 for 5th. Hurricane's Matt Burdette grabbed the final spot by just 0.05.

Byrd's Jimmy DeMarco each cleared 12' in taking 5th and 6th, respectively.
RunWV's Current Score: 64 of 84.

Cabell Midland's Christian Edwards was well back in 3rd. Parkersburg's Jason Forrester edged Wheeling Park's Jimmy Burress by 0.01 and Buckhannon-Upshur's Andrew Carrier by 0.03 to take 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 78 of 102.

4x400 Meter Relay
Brooke proved to any doubters that they were the real deal by taking the event by over two seconds. They took the lead during Sophomore Isaac Jones' sub-51 second second leg and never came close to relinquishing it as their 3rd and 4th legs both clocked low 51's. Jefferson scored a 2nd place out of the 1st heat. What a shame those two teams weren't able to go head-to-head. Cabell Midland was a mere 0.17 slower than Jefferson in taking 3rd. South Charleston aslo ran exceptionally well from the first heat to take 4th. Wheeling Park grabbed 5th, and Ripley claimed the final spot just just 0.22 seconds over Fairmont Senior.
RunWV's Current Score: 83 of 108.

The final score of 83 of 108 means that 76.9 % of the people picked to place did indeed place. Congratulations to those that proved us wrong.
